The Canopy Group Began as the Sunderman Agency in January of 1930 and focused on Personal Life and Property Protection.
The Sunderman Agency was renamed Pedersen/Sunderman as Dick Pedersen joined the company in 1952. Dick Pedersen added Commercial Lines and Health Insurance coverage. The Pedersen/Sunderman Agency prospered during the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, creating large market share by delivering excellent risk management services.
The late 1980's introduced Bill Handwerk and the Agency began specializing in the specific markets within the insurance and investment markets. Bill purchased the agency in 1990, and renamed it: The Handwerk Agency. In 2002 The Handwerk Agency merged with The John Ploetz Agency in Belle Plaine, Minnesota. Together these agencies created a great team of professionals in the field of risk management.
In 2004 Jeff McDonald, Tim Lewis, and Paul Borchert purchased the Handwerk Agency and renamed it: The Canopy Group. The Canopy Group is now focused on providing risk assessment and risk management solutions for all of our business, and personal customers.
